Verizon comes up with list of apps that could drain your phone's battery life

While the app store is littered with dozens of great apps that do everything from shooting videos to shooting aliens, many are notorious for draining your phones battery life as fast as a dog drinks water on a hot summer's day.

But a major U.S. carrier is releasing a list of the apps -- apps it has evaluated-- based on how many bits of data they'll hog, how much battery juice they'll suck up and how big a security risk they create for users.

Verizon released the list of the top 25 free and paid apps for Google's Android operating system.

Angry Birds fans - rejoice. Verizon's experts hand it a five-star rating and it tops the list.

Racing game Asphalt 7: Heat scored 2.5 points (out of five) due to heavy battery use.

One of the worst-rated apps is Hill Climb Pro. Verizon's ratings suggest that it eats through a phone's battery and data bandwidth like a 1970s muscle car would burn through fuel.

Internet radio app Tunein Radio Pro scored poorly as well because of all the data it could use up. The app streams music (which is based on lots of data), so no surprises it wound up on this list.

But as Bloomberg Businessweek reports, Facebook is one of the apps that uses up more data than usual. In fact, Alcatel-Lucent found that Facebook data represents 15 per cent of mobile data usage.

Which apps do you think use up the most data or battery life?
