Pokki: an app that brings the start button back to Windows 8

Many people’s most common complaint with Windows 8 is that it doesn’t have a start button. Sure, there are dozens of live tiles you can swipe across and get updates pushed to your fingertips.

But meanwhile when in Desktop mode, there is no Start button. There’s no way to pop open a menu and jump to different programs, or pull up files you need to work on.

That’s where Pokki comes in. This is the app that brings back a sense of comfort to Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Pokki, available here, adds an imitation Start menu to the bottom-left corner of Windows 8 when in Desktop mode.

Click the acorn to bring up a column of options that’ll let you open up your programs, organized and grouped into folders and sections under ‘All Apps.’

Your most used apps will appear under the ‘Favourites’ section for easy access to stuff you use often.

Documents, likewise, are available from the menu.

My favourite addition is the search bar, which adds the functionality to look for programs or files from the Windows 8 Desktop mode.

Users can also download mini apps from Pokki as well, such as Instagrille for checking their Facebook feed, or Facebook Lite for social networking.

For those who like the Desktop Mode so much (and dislike the Metro interface), Pokki offers a feature that'll let you boot your computer straight into Desktop mode.

What do you like/dislike with Windows 8?
