Is Apple testing the iPhone 6?

A new report suggests Apple is already testing the next generation iPhone – and one analyst thinks Apple could eventually be selling coloured handsets.

According to tech news website The Next Web, Apple seems to be testing a new phone, judging by telltale signs left in software logs.

App developers working with Apple's iOS operating system tell TNW that they have spotted logs for a device with the identifier “iPhone6.1” that's running iOS 7.

What's more is that the software is calling out from an IP address that is linked to Apple's Cupertino campus – a strong indication that something's going on related to the next iPhone.

So, should we believe that Apple is already working on the next iPhone – an iPhone 6, perhaps – based on seeing the iPhone 6.1 identifier? You bet.

Eagle-eyed developers were alerted to the iPhone 5 when they spotted Apple using the iPhone5.1 identifier, and the iPhone 4S was called iPhone4.2, the iPhone 4 was the iPhone4.1 – well, you get the idea.

Meanwhile, one business analyst is predicting that the iPhone will be a lot more colourful.

According to MacRumors, Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White is suggesting that Apple will roll out iPhones in different colours, just like we see with iPods that range in colour from pink to green.

What's more is that White is suggesting Apple may come out with iPhones featuring different screen sizes.

So far, Apple has stuck to the 3.5-inch screen on all phones but the iPhone 5, which has a taller screen.

“We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach,” White wrote.

If you're not a banker and don't write with big words such as “bifurcate” to boost your sense of confidence, it seems like they're thinking Apple is hoping to branch out with phones for all price ranges.

What would you like to see Apple do with their next iPhone?
