Did record company hike price of Whitney Houston album after death?
Whitney Houston’s record company is coming under scrutiny after the price of her greatest hits album rose by nearly 60 per cent shortly after her death.
Was Apple trying to cash in on the singer’s tragic death? Or was Sony to blame for prompting higher revenues? The timing was incredibly coincidental.
By Monday night, Houston’s albums had the second and third most popular albums in the Canadian iTunes store.
The Guardian reports that Sony raised the wholesale of the album at about 4 a.m. California time. That change automatically increased the retail price for the album in the world’s largest digital music store.
The change was reflected within 30 minutes of the official announcement of the pop superstar’s death.
Apple apparently lowered the price back down by late Sunday.
An insider “close to the situation” told the Guardian that the price change “was not a cynical move” and was instead a change because the whole price of her album was wrong.
In any case, the Official Charts Company estimates that Whitney Houston’s music will dominate the charts over the next week.
