Users picking Android, iPhone over RIM’s BlackBerry

There were rumours that Research in Motion was throwing in the towel on its tablet computer, the PlayBook. Even worse - there are recent facts, however, suggesting consumers are throwing in the towel on RIM’s BlackBerry smartphones.

According to market research from Nielson, more than 50 per cent of customers who bought a smartphone (in the U.S.) during the last three months went with an Android device.

To be exact, Nielson said the exact number is 56 per cent.

Apple, meanwhile, fared quite well with 28 per cent of new purchases – equal to its market share.

Now for the sad part. Only 9 per cent of subscribers in the past three months went with Research in Motion’s BlackBerry. That’s not even a full one in ten people, but almost one in ten. Oh dear.

Apple’s iPhone is doing quite well, actually. Don’t forget – they don’t exactly offer the most affordable handsets.

For those wondering where Nokia (Symbian), Windows Phone 7 and all the rest sit, the two combined clock in at 6 per cent of sales during the last three months.

Bottom line? Android is now in top gear. Apple is still coasting along (rightly so). RIM is grinding the clutch and Nokia/Microsoft is rolling along, just not fast enough.
