New game will let you rock out - on a real guitar

Rocksmith_PS3_1.jpg Games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have been incredibly popular amongst people who can rock out on a fake, plastic guitar that has no guitar strings and no real frets.

Soon, gamers will be able to rock out to a similar game with any real guitar.

Get ready to build up some callus on your fingers - Ubisoft says it's working on a new game called Rocksmith, where users will be able to plug in "any" guitar (with a jack) and play along as if they were a rock star.

The video game will be available for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation3 and the PC.

Something else that they say is different with this music-based game is that there aren't preset difficulty levels - the game automatically adjusts to your amount of skill.

The selection of songs people will be able to play along to doesn't seem too shabby: The Black Keys, David Bowie, Nirvana, Interpol and The Rolling Stones are just some of the offerings Ubisoft says will be available on Rocksmith.

This isn't the first time a developer has tried to bring real guitars to gaming consoles: Power Gig: RIse of the Six String used a hybrid instrument that had strings...and traditional Guitar Hero-esque fret buttons.

But according to a seasoned guitarist (and former colleague of mine), that game wasn't exactly in tune with fun.

What might be the problem is that people who can't play guitar love being able to sound like a rock star with the toy instruments from games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

People who want to sound like rock stars will spend time rehearsing with a guitar, not waiting for levels to load on their gaming console...or will they?

Perhaps Rocksmith will be different. We'll find out for sure when the game comes out this fall.

What do you think about a music-based game that lets you use real instruments?
