Share your memories with a digital scrapbook
Hallmark -- the largest greeting card maker in North America, and about to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year -- is diving deeper into the digital domain with its new Hallmark Digital Scrapbook products.
Essentially, these clever $20 products are dolled-up USB drives with embedded software that lets you create and share personalized memories with friends and family -- or give them as gifts.
Available in five themes -- Holiday, Family, Friend, Baby and Love -- these digital scrapbook makers let you create a moving slideshow with more than 50 of your own photos, words and music. Once completed, they can be viewed by plugging into a computer or digital frame, or burned to a DVD to watch on a television.
Alternatively, you can email the sentimental slideshow, post it to a social networking site (like Facebook) or blog, or print them out for a traditional scrapbook or photo album. Each theme comes with its own fonts, colours, borders and designs (check out the website for examples).
We tried both the Holiday and Family versions and were impressed with how easy they were to use -- and how professional the final product looks. These Hallmark Digital Scrapbooks work on both Windows PCs and Macs, and keep in mind an Internet connection is required to update the software before use.

By having a narrow edge of colored paper around the outside edges of your photos, you can 'bring out' a certain color in the photo. This enhances the visual impact of the photo. You can use more than one color mat at a time. You can also off-set a mat in creative ways. Lots of people cut the mat with fancy scissors to give a distinctive cut edge that ties in with the over all design of the page.
