On augmented reality and lame gimmicks

Remember our post the other day on augmented reality? It sounds as though it's spreading faster than we thought. Apparently, the December issue of Esquire will feature several AR pages that will throw up animations when viewed through a web cam.

Pimp your pumpkin with this high tech squash wizardry

Once again, it is that time of year when the vital between this world and the next is at its thinnest. We are geeks here at Geektown, and wouldn't dream of letting the holiday go without a suitably spooky high-tech project or two.

No cities left: Geocities shuts down, but won't be forgotten

It's the end of an era - albeit a very ugly era. Yahoo just shut down Geocities, the web page hosting service that it purchased in 1999 for $3.56bn. It didn't sell it. It didn't licence it. It just canned it. Ooh, that's gotta hurt.

High-tech pranks

OK, so I probably should have saved this post until April 1, but what the heck. This PC prankster device looks too good for high-tech jokers to pass up. The USB stick sits unobtrusively in the back of a PC, and makes it do unpredictable things. It'll turn caps lock on and off, type random text, and move the mouse around on its own. Most of the gadget blogs seem to be pointing to this page as the source, but it looks like the same one that's listed here.

How to stop yourself being an Internet hothead

Have you ever suffered from Internet rage? Come on, we've all done it. That email you sent, which you regretted as soon as you hit the 'Send' button? The blog comment you made, which was perhaps just a bit too opinionated? The problem with being online is that the Internet is a distancing technology. It is easy to forget that what you say has real meaning, and can hurt people's feelings.

Should you need a passport to log on to the net?

Should you need a passport to use the Internet? Eugene Kaspersky, founder of the Kaspersky anti-malware software firm, said in a recent interview with ZDNet that everyone should have a traceable identity online. One of the biggest single problem is with today's Internet is its anonymity, he argues.
